    ORIGINAL SYNOPSIS

Act I / Sixteenth-century Mantua, a hall in the ducal palace. During a celebration in the palace, the Duke of Mantua relates his latest adventures to his courtiers. He talks about a beautiful young woman that he noticed in church and means to pursue. At the same time he flirts with Countess Ceprano. Rigoletto, the hunchback jester of the court, mocks the Countess’s unfortunate husband and encourages the Duke to banish or even execute him. When Marullo, a nobleman, spreads the rumour that Rigoletto has been seen with a mistress, the courtiers decide to take revenge on him by abducting her. Another nobleman, Count Monterone, chastises the Duke for dishonouring his daughter. Rigoletto’s sarcastic reply brings down Monterone’s anathe ma on both Rigoletto and the Duke. An alley near Rigoletto’s house. Rigoletto continues to think of the curse as he returns home. On the way, he meets Sparafucile, a hired assassin who offers his services. When he reaches his house, Gilda, his daughter, assures him that while he is away she only leaves the house to go to church. However, when she is left alone with her governess, she apologetically confesses that she did not tell her father about a young man whom she met in church, who is in fact the Duke. Just as she declares her love for him, the Duke, who has been listening to their conversation, emerges from his hiding place to announce his feelings for her, presenting himself in the guise of a poor student. Meanwhile, the courtiers Ceprano, Borsa and Marullo arrive outside the house to abduct the girl that they mistakenly consider Rigoletto’s mistress. When Rigoletto appears, they tell him that they are planning to abduct Countess Ceprano and ask for his help. He accepts, and they succeed in blindfolding him. When he realizes the truth, it is too late: the courtiers have already abducted Gilda.

Act II / In the Duke’s Palace. The courtiers inform the Duke that they have abducted Rigoletto’s mistress. Realizing that they speak of Gilda, he rushes to his bedchamber in order to stay alone with her. Rigoletto begs them to set her free, and they at last realize that they have abducted his daughter, not his mistress. After the appearance of Gilda, who feels in love but also remorseful, Rigoletto swears vengeance.

Act III / A deserted bank of the river Mincio near Mantua. Rigoletto and Gilda reach Sparafucile’s inn. Rigoletto wants to have the Duke killed and makes arrangements with the assassin, while Gilda watches the Duke flirt with Maddalena, Sparafucile’s sister. Maddalena feels attracted to the Duke, and she tries to persuade Sparafucile to spare him. He promises that if someone else comes along before the time allotted, he will kill that person instead of their visitor. Gilda, overhearing this conversation, decides to sacrifice herself. She knocks on the door and, disguised as a man, she enters the inn. Rigoletto reappears to claim the lifeless body, which has been placed in a sack for easy disposal. He pays Sparafucile and is about to cast the body into the river, when he suddenly hears the Duke’s voice. Bewildered, he opens the sack to find Gilda, on the brink of death. He recalls the curse one last time, and the curtain falls.

Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) at a glance

The composer / Antonio Gioachino Rossini was born in Pesaro in 1792. In 1806 he enrolled at the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna, where, as a student, he composed his first opera. Success came soon: in 1812 his comic opera La pietra del paragone was performed at La Scala in Milan, while in 1813 two works, the serious Tancredi and the
comic Italiana in Algeri, carried his name beyond the borders of the Italian peninsula. In 1814 he assumed the post of director for both of Naples’ most important opera houses, for which he penned some of his most important works. A number of these were composed especially for the singer Isabella Colbran, whom the composer married
in 1822. Among these are Otello (1816), Armida (1817), Mose in Egitto (1818), Ermione (1819), La donna del lago (1819), Maometto ΙΙ (1820) and Zelmira (1822). In 1822 Rossini travelled to Vienna where he met Beethoven. In 1824 he settled in Paris, where, in 1829, he staged Guillaume Tell, his very last opera. Rossini stopped writing for the stage and spent the last 39 years of his life composing mainly songs for voice and piano as well as sacred music. He died in Paris in 1868. His remains were taken to Florence in 1887.

The work / Cesare Sterbini’s libretto for Rossini’s two act melodramma buffo Il barbiere di Siviglia is based on the homonymous comedy by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1775) as well as on Giuseppe Petrosellini same name opera by Giovanni Paisiello, first produced in 1782. The plot recounts all the tricks that Count Almaviva
employs in order to marry his beloved Rosina, whom Don Bartolo, her elderly guardian intends to marry himself. Almaviva succeeds with the help of the barber Figaro, who enters Don Bartolo’s home without restrictions.

Premieres / Il barbiere di Siviglia was first performed at Rome’s Teatro Argentina on 20 February 1816. There is evidence of a performance of the work on Corfu in 1833. In Athens the opera was produced as a parody in 1837. The Greek National Opera, founded in 1940, added the work to its repertory on 11 March 1942.

    Synopsis of the original

Act I / In Seville, Count Almaviva appears in disguise as Lindoro, a poor student, in order to win the heart of the beautiful Rosina. The girl lives with her guardian Don Bartolo, who intends to marry her himself. In order to get closer to Rosina, Almaviva asks for the help of the barber Figaro, formerly in his service. After being promised a good sum of money, Figaro agrees. Don Basilio, the music teacher, informs Don Bartolo that Almaviva is in town and that he is charmed by Rosina. He also tells him that he knows of a sure way to defeat his enemy. According to their plan, Figaro and Almaviva enter Don
Bartolo’s residence. Almaviva pretends to be a drunken soldier, but Don Bartolo argues he has exemption from billeting soldiers. Because of all the noise a crowd has gathered in the street and the civil guard arrives in order to arrest the drunken soldier. When Almaviva secretly reveals his true identity to the captain, he is immediately released to everyone’s –but Figaro’s– surprise.

Act II / Almaviva returns to Don Bartolo’s residence, this time disguised as a music teacher. He has come to give Rosina a singing lesson, replacing Don Basilio, who, he says, is ill at home. Figaro arrives in time for Don Bartolo’s daily shave. Cunningly, Figaro manages to snatch the key to balcony door, so that he and Almaviva can return later and abduct Rosina. Don Basilio arrives unexpectedly and Almaviva bribes him in order to keep quiet. Berta, Don Bartolo’s maid, comments on her master’s desire to marry a girl so much younger than him. Don Basilio finally reveals the truth to Don Bartolo. He, in turn, realises that he must move quickly and find a notary in order to marry Rosina. He shows Rosina the letter she had written to Lindoro and tells her that he got it from Almaviva. A storm passes. Figaro and Almaviva climb on the balcony but when Rosina arrives, they lose time in order to give sufficient explanation for Almaviva’s disguise as Lindoro.
Meanwhile, someone has removed the ladder, so that they cannot escape.
Don Basilio arrives with the notary, but as things turn out he marries Rosina to Almaviva. Don Basilio is bribed for the second time and together with Figaro serve as witnesses.
Don Bartolo and the police arrive too late. Don Bartolo has no alternative but to congratulate the newly weds.

Here

Written by

A theatre and music workshop in collaboration with the street magazine “Schedia”, the Reception and Solidarity Centre of the Municipality of Athens and the Athens 2018 Global Book Capital project. With the support of the Athens Municipality Cultural Network. Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities offered the inspiration for the creation of a meeting point in the form of a workshop, titled Here, where people can meet and communicate through speech and sound. People who see the city through the eyes none of us has. Sounds produced in their primal form, creating an urban timbre that none of us has heard. Stories telling a personal trajectory in a city with many faces that none of us has noticed. Calvino’s approach of fantastic cities, in relation to the participants-experienced but invisible to the rest of us city of Athens, is the baseline for a fruitful interaction of speech and sound, stories and songs, theatre and music.

Intercultural Choir

Written by

From Athens to Papua New Guinea, from Kenya to Ukraine and from Slovakia to Tanzania, people from all four corners of the earth unite their voices, become one and interpret songs speaking straight to the heart. This is the power of the GNO Alternative Stage’s Intercultural Choir which continues its multicultural journey through the world’s neighbourhoods. In the third year since its creation, the Intercultural Choir continues to offer unique moments and intense feelings to the audiences, and at the same time a unique experience to its members.
Songs of unpaired melodic richness from the traditional music of the countries of origin of its members constitute the Intercultural Choir’s repertory, which continues to be enriched with new material. Already, the Choir has over 25 members, while the last two years it has conducted workshops in refugee and immigrant accommodation sites as well as in open concerts at Kypseli and Omonia squares, at the Athens Airport and the Summer Nostos Festival of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

Intercultural Orchestra

Written by

In October 2018 another music journey without boundaries begins! The Alternative Stage in cooperation with the GNO Educational and Social Activities create a new Intercultural Orchestra. Permanent or temporary residents of Athens, professional and amateur musicians from all the communities of the city are called upon to participate, live a unique experience and create a multi-ethnic repertory from the musical traditions of their countries of origin.
The Intercultural Orchestra aspires to bring the universal language of music closer to us and serves as a focal point for getting together and co-existing, fostering mutual understanding and accepting diversity.
“The point of reference of this ensemble will be music, which – as a universal practise that unites and does not separate, engages in a dialogue and does not force itself – will attempt to open up perspectives, give hope, and mainly, bring forth, incorporate and accept diversity”, notes Harris Lambrakis, the choir manager.

Le Nozze di Figaro Revisited

Written by

A heavy set, impressive costumes and red velvet don’t always make for a successful opera. In some cases the only thing needed as a set is a few singers, a pianist and a closet. As simple as that. In this pocket opera, this tiny opera production, precedence is given to music and interpretation. Taking into consideration all of the above, GNO’s Educational and Social Activities shrink Mozart’s comic opera Le Nozze di Figaro into two parallel workshops to create its pocket version with all of you as protagonists! The participants of these two interconnected workshops (music and visual arts/scenography) will morph into composers, musicians, singers and set designers of their very own opera and will become a large company. In this wildly fun pocket opera there’s room for everybody!

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 40 participants (visual group for children aged 8-12, music group for teenagers aged 13-18)

The Nightingale Whispered To Me

Written by

While children and adults will be getting enthralled by the great Lena Platonos’s musical fairy tale The emperor’s nightingale at the GNO Alternative Stage, something equally magical will be happening at the GNO’s Studio B on the 5th floor. There, little children participating in the exciting animation workshop The nightingale whispered to me will create their own original performance, in which the set will not consist of ordinary objects but unique motion pictures! After having been taught the basic principles of animation, they will then write the script, experiment with motion pictures, direct and star in their very own animated performance! So, there, at Studio B, a colourful animated world will be brought to life and the nightingale’s whisper will become a song by “tomorrow’s” script writers, directors and protagonists.

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 15 participants aged 9-12

Participation is free on a first come first served basis

The participants of these two interconnected workshops (music and visual arts/scenography) will morph into composers, musicians, singers and set designers of their very own opera and will become a large company. In this wildly fun pocket opera there’s room for everybody!

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 40 participants (visual group for children aged 8-12, music group for teenagers aged 13-18)

Participation is free on a first come first served basis

Isadora Duck

Written by

Isadora Duck is not a random duck. The protagonist of Stella Michailidou’s children’s book is a  petit duck who dreams of becoming a ballerina. Although she is last is in her class, her name is evocative of  the top modern dancer Isadora Duncan. The true story of the priestess of modern dance through a book that talks in a direct way about each person’s uniqueness, the acceptance of  diversity, artistic expression and the right to dream. That’s also exactly the goal of the successful programme Isadora Duck, which for a second year in a row turns the GNO’s Studio B into a…swan lake, with little students (1st, 2nd, 3d & 4th graders) identifying themselves with the adventures of this special duck and releasing their expressiveness. In this programme, which is based on educational drama techniques and musico-pedagogical methods, students dance to the music of Tchaikovsky, sing in unison, exchange creative roles, experiment with their voices and cooperate by playing fun games. In three words: encouragement, awareness, acceptance.

El retablo de Maese Pedro

Written by

In October 2019, Manuel de Falla’s masterly puppet opera El retablo de maese Pedro (1922) will continue its journey to the municipal and regional theatres of Northern Greece, from the 1st to the 12th of October. Uniting the magical world of opera with puppet theatre, this one-act opera tells the story of one of the most exciting and humorous episodes of Miguel de Cervantes’ classic book, Don Quixote.

In January 2020, the opera will return to the venues of the Greek National Opera at the SNFCC for selected performances for schools aiming to induct small viewers into the world of lyric theatre.
