Ο συνθέτης O Ρώσος Πιοτρ Ίλιτς Τσαϊκόφσκι (1840-1893) υπήρξε ένας από τους δημοφιλέστερους συνθέτες του 19ου αιώνα. Συνέθεσε με την ίδια επιτυχία συμφωνίες, κοντσέρτα, όπερες, μουσική δωματίου και μουσική για τα μπαλέτα Η λίμνη των κύκνων (1877), Η ωραία κοιμωμένη (1890), O καρυοθραύστης (1892). Μέχρι σήμερα τα μπαλέτα αυτά παραμένουν τα δημοφιλέστερα του ρεπερτορίου, χάρη στη συναισθηματική δύναμη και τη θεατρικότητα της μουσικής τους, στοιχεία που χάρισαν στη μουσική για μπαλέτο την υπόληψη αυτόνομου μουσικού έργου. Τα ίδια στοιχεία, που διέπουν συνολικά το δημιουργικό έργο του Τσαϊκόφσκι, οδήγησαν επίσης αρκετούς χορογράφους στην αξιοποίηση της μουσικής του συνθέτη με τη δημιουργία νέων έργων. Έτσι, δεν είναι συμπτωματικό ότι το όνομα του Τσαϊκόφσκι έχει συνδεθεί με την τέχνη του χορού, ίσως περισσότερο από οποιουδήποτε άλλου συναδέλφου του.

To έργο Στην αρχική του μορφή το τρίπρακτο μπαλέτο Η ωραία κοιμωμένη βασίζεται στο γνωστό παραμύθι Η ωραία κοιμωμένη του δάσους [La Belle au bois dormant] του Σαρλ Περρώ [Charles Perrault, 1628-1703], που εκδόθηκε το 1697. Αυτό με τη σειρά του στηρίζεται στο Ήλιος, σελήνη και Τάλια της συλλογής Παραμύθι των παραμυθιών[Lo cunto de li cunti] του Τζαμπαττίστα Μπαζίλε [Giambattista Basile, 1566-1632], η οποία εκδόθηκε το 1634. Το σενάριο του μπαλέτου το διαμόρφωσε ο Ιβάν Βζεβολόσκι και τη χορογραφία ο Μαριύς Πετιπά [Marius Petipa].

Πρεμιέρες Η Ωραία κοιμωμένη των Πετιπά και Τσαϊκόφσκι πρωτοπαρουσιάστηκε στο θέατρο Μαριίνσκι της Αγίας Πετρούπολης στις 15 Ιανουαρίου 1890.

Από το μπαλέτο της Εθνικής Λυρικής Σκηνής το έργο παραστάθηκε για πρώτη φορά στις 25 Φεβρουαρίου 1994 στη χορογραφία του Μαριύς Πετιπά σε αναβίωση της Μένιας Μαρτίνες [Menia Martinez] με τη Μαρία Μηλιοπούλου στον ρόλο του τίτλου και τον Γιάννη Ντοντσάκη ως Πρίγκιπα Ποθητό.
