Ballet Director

Greek choreographer and director, he was born in Athens. He studied Finance at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and dance at the National School of Dance, of which he is President of the BoD since 2019. Over the years, he has signed a number of dance productions and has been responsible for various innovative creations.
Since February 2018 he has been Director of the Greek National Opera Ballet. For the Greek National Opera he choreographed the works Les Sylphides and A Little Piece Peace for America in 2007, while in 2017 he directed Dimitris Maramis’ Erotokritos.
For the GNO Ballet he choreographed Swan Lake and Stravinsky’s Les Noces (as part of the triptych From Russia with Love), Dance With My Own Shadow, The Nutcracker, Lieder ohne Worte, Pedal for a Child and Les Nuits d’été, while he directed and choreographed a new production of La traviata at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the musical Cheap Smokes for the GNO Alternative Stage.
He served as the artistic director of the Dance Theatre of the National Theatre of Northern Greece (2001-2005) for which he choreographed works such as The Sleeping Βeauty, Bluebeard, The Shipwreck, Swan Lake City, Cithaeron, Winter Journey, Winterreise, Igor’s Room, 143 Helidon idomeni..!, White Noise and Free Besieged.
In 1990 he formed the OKTANA Dance Theatre Company, which significantly contributed to the development of modern dance in Greece. The company presented works such as Les Noces, Room 5, See You Through the Years – The Garden, Daphnis & Chloe, The Athlete, 5 Seasons, Hotel Orpheus, Icarus – Explosive Decompression, La Dame aux camélias, Alkistis, The Boxing Ring, Crazy Happiness, Utopia, Winter Journey, Free Besieged – Draft b, Dressed / Undressed, The Nutcracker, Neverland, The Emperor’s New Clothes, Arcadia, Babel, to the centre, etc.
Rigos’ choreographies have won multiple awards. Among others: Municipality of Athens Contest (1990, 1992), National Dance Award (1995, 1996), National Choreography Award (1999, 2001) and Melina Merkouri Award (1997). They have also been very well received by various international dance festivals worldwide (UK, Egypt, Venezuela, Bosnia, Brazil, France, Germany, Georgia, USA, Spain, Italy, Israel, Colombia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Singapore, Sweden, etc).
He has directed plays from the Greek and international repertoire (The Knights, Romeo and Juliet, Hedda Gabler, Red Lanterns, Void in Person, Sevas Hanιm, The Emperor’s New Clothes, Pornstar, Butterflies in the Stomach, Vesalii Icones, Cabaret, Rocky Horror, Brokeback Mountain, Frutopia, Fairy Tales in the Mixer, The bull who played the pipe), shows, concerts and music videos, as well as performances (Much Ado and Nothing, Bossa Nova, Titanic, Wind for the National Theatre of Greece), in which he combines all his versatile skills.
As a choreographer he has worked for movies and plays from the (ancient and contemporary) Greek and international repertoire. As a contributing artist and photographer he has collaborated with journals and newspapers. As a visual artist, he has participated in collective exhibitions of important organisations in Greece and Cyprus.
