One of previous season’s biggest successes, Theofrastos Sakellaridis’ operetta The Godson (Vaftistikos) is being brought back again this year by the Greek National Opera. The hilarious traditional stage direction, is by the theatrical director Simos Kakalas.

The impressive melodic wealth of the operetta, the libretto’s humour and the way in which the work captured an entire age are key elements which have ensured that The Godson has remained popular down through the ages. Sakellaridis managed to combine a libretto with an interesting plot and constant comic twists with cheerful, melodic tunes.

The story narrates a series of misunderstandings that arise when Petros Harmidis, a solider at the front and spouse of Kiki, decides to dress up as the godchild of Vivika. She hasn’t seen him since he was a little child and doesn’t remember him. Pretending to be her godchild, he visits her home where she lives with her husband Zacharoulis, where Kiki –quite by coincidence– happens to be a guest.
