The programme ‘The GNO Tours Greece’ continues with a new original music theatre production that creates a fruitful dialogue between music and sports. Alexandros Mouzas’ The Athlete’s Symphony will be presented in 15 cities across Crete, Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, and Epirus from 24 March to 15 May 2026. More specifically, the production will visit Crete (Chania, Rethymno, Ierapetra, Sitia, Agios Nikolaos), Eastern Macedonia & Thrace (Drama, Doxato, Komotini, Kavala, Chrysoupoli, Eleftheroupoli), and Epirus (Ioannina, Konitsa, Arta, Preveza). The tour across Greece is made possible by a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) to enhance the Greek National Opera’s artistic outreach.

The performance, with music and a libretto by Alexandros Mouzas, stage direction, and set and costume coordination by Anna-Moscha Kambosou, aims to highlight the importance of physical exercise and mental balance, collaboration, fair competition, self-discipline, and determination to achieve goals as well as embracing diversity. Through music, these elements are not presented as theoretical concepts but as lived experiences that unfold onstage in the here and now.

The work The Athlete’s Symphony is an allegorical musical journey from complete inaction to the liberating power of exercise. Three friends meet in a familiar space filled with toys and objects that are almost always unused. Engulfed in the routine and sluggishness of everyday life, they humourously yet candidly acknowledge their deep boredom. Nothing motivates them; no plan seems strong enough to lift them from their state of inertia. Through musical episodes, witty dialogue, and constantly shifting stage action, the idea of moving and exercising—initially seen as a game, almost a joke—gradually changes its meaning, as thinking and visualising oneself as an ‘athlete’ becomes a symbol of effort, persistence, and change. As the three heroes strive to overcome their habit of not moving, they discover the joy of taking action, the power of collaboration, and the importance of daring to take the first step. In this way, their personal awakening turns into a small, optimistic symphony about life.

The work’s music, reflecting the intensity and diversity of the movement onstage, viscerally intertwines the lyrical parts and orchestral excerpts with the modern rhythms of hip-hop songs and electronic dance music. The experience grows richer through a sound design that combines recordings of everyday sounds with natural sounds produced onstage, creating a vibrant, sometimes contrapuntal dialogue between realism and musical imagination.

The production features the soloists Effie Papadopoulou (soprano), Paris Paraskevadis (tenor), and Christos Rammopoulos (baritone), along with a small instrumental ensemble from the GNO. Participating alongside them will be mixed children’s choirs and student instrumental ensembles from Music Schools, Municipal Conservatories, and private music schools as well as hip-hop, sports, and arts groups from the cities hosting the performance. This way, each presentation will develop its own unique character, tailored to the traits and dynamics of each group, thereby enhancing each local community’s creativity.

Admission to all performances held as part of ‘The GNO Tours Greece’ programme will be free for the public.
