Notice of competitions to fill 12 vacant posts for permanent artistic staff of the Greek National Opera Orchestra

Following on from Decision – Notice No. ΥΠΠΟΑ/ΓΔΔΥΗΔ/ΔΔΑΑΔ/ΤΥΕΦΤΠ/228976/22870/20564/1309, (Web Ref. No. 78ΕΩ4653Π4-12Θ) to fill 12 vacant posts for permanent artistic staff of the Greek National Opera Orchestra, we would like to announce that the deadline for submitting applications to fill those posts runs from 22.7.2016 to 22.8.2016.

Exam syllabus

In accordance with Presidential Decree 76/1993 and Decision No. ΥΠΠΟ/ΚΑΤΕΧΝ/Δ/35836/99, the exam syllabus includes the following

  1. A mandatory concerto (the entire piece)

Category 3

  1. Principal in 2nd Violins
    MOZART: One of the concertos No. 4 (in D Major) KV 218 or No 5 (in A Major) KV 219, with cadenza
  2. Principal Clarinet:
    MOZART: Concerto in A Major KV 622
  3. Principal Bassoon:
    MOZART: Concerto in B Flat Major KV 191, with cadenza
  4. Principal Timpani:
    TAERICHEN: Concerto for timpani, Op. 34 (with piano accompaniment)

Category 4

    1. Sub Principal in 1st violins:
      MOZART: One of the concertos No. 4 (in D major) KV 218 or No 5 (in A Major) KV 219, with cadenza
    2. Sub Principal in Violas:
      One of the concertos by HOFMEISTER, STAMITZ
    3. 2nd Flute:
      MOZART: One of the concertos in D Major KV 314 or in G Major KV 313, without cadenza
    4. 2nd Clarinet:
      WEBER: Concerto No. 2, Op. 74 in E Flat Major
    5. 2nd Bassoon:
      WEBER : Concerto in F Major, Op. 75
    6. 2nd – 3rd – 4th Horn:
      MOZART: Concerto No. 2, in E Flat Major, KV 417
    7. 2nd Trumpet:
      HUMMEL: Concerto in E major (with a C Trumpet)
    8. Sub Principal in Percussions:

JOLIVET: Concerto for percussion, 1st Movement, from No. 8 to No. 14 (Caisse Claire, Tambour militaire)/3rd Movement (accompanied by a piano in both Movements)

  1. A musical work chosen by the candidate.
    On the day of the exams candidates must bring 2 copies of the musical work they have chosen with them.
  2. Performance of one or several more difficult parts from symphonic or operatic works, at the Committee’s choice.
    The orchestral excerpts will be provided to candidates at the Protocol Office located at 39 Panepistimiou St., 3rd floor, Athens GR-10564, Monday to Friday during working hours (09:00-14:30) (tel. 210.3711330 and 210.3711200).
  3. Prima vista works.
    Candidates must bring their own pianists (accompanist).

Persons wishing to participate in the competitions must submit a printed application form within a fixed deadline of 30 days from the final publication of the notice in the daily press or post it to the Protocol Office, 3rd floor, 39 Panepistimiou St. Athens GR-10564.

Interested parties can obtain application forms along with a copy of this notice from the Protocol Office, 3rd floor, 39 Panepistimiou St. Athens GR-10564 Monday to Friday during working hours (09:00-14:30) (tel. 210.3711330 and 210.3711200) or from the GNO’s website (www.nationalopera.gr).

When submitting the application form candidates must also submit a CV and any other information which would help form a picture of their artistic personality and abilities. They must also provide a copy of their ID card and degree or diploma in the relevant areas of expertise (musical instrument) from a recognized music training establishment in Greece or an equivalent diploma from a training establishment abroad.

If a candidate is applying for 2 posts, he/she must fill out 2 different application forms.
A new notice will be posted on the GNO website indicating the precise dates of auditions for candidates.
