OLIVER MEARS

English stage director, he has been the Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden, London) since 2017. Ηe was artistic director of the NIO (2010-2017). He studied English literature and history (Oxford University) and then worked with the playwright Howard Barker. In 2004, he co-founded the opera company Second Movement (London), for which he directed numerous site-specific productions. He has directed the productions L’elisir d’amore, Der fliegende Holländer, Macbeth, Salome, Agrippina, Hänsel und Gretel, Turn of the Screw, Noye’s Fludde for NIO and for Beijing and Shanghai Music Festivals. For the ROH (London), he has directed Tosca, Semele (also for Théâtre des Champs-Élysées), Trouble in Tahiti / A Quiet Place, The Rape of Lucretia (also for the Aldeburgh Festival), Rigoletto and Jephtha. He has also directed for the Salzburg Easter Festival (La Gioconda), Norwegian National Opera (L’elisir d’amore), Magdeburg Theatre (Aida), Scottish Opera (Eugene Onegin, Orphée aux enfers), Welsh National Opera (Macbeth), Young Vic (My Dad’s a Birdman) and the Nederlandse Reisopera.
