STEPHEN LANGRIDGE

English stage director, he studied drama at Exeter University. Particularly noted for his work in the field of opera, he has directed at the Chicago Lyric Opera, Royal Swedish Opera (Stockholm), Tokyo Opera City, Den Norske Opera Oslo, Rome Opera, Vienna Volksoper, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Salzburg and Bregenz Festivals, Donizetti Opera Festival (Bergamo) and at the operas of Bordeaux, Lisbon, Malmö, Angers-Nantes, Hanover. A strong advocate of contemporary music, he has directed several world premieres for the ROH (Covent Garden), Aldeburgh Festival, Nationale Reisopera, Glyndebourne. He was artistic director of Göteborg Opera (2013–2018), where he staged Le nozze di Figaro, Thomas’ Hamlet and Elektra as well as Der Ring des Nibelungen. He also directs in unusual settings such as high security prisons and organises educational workshops around the world. Since 2019 he has been Αrtistic Director of Glyndebourne. At the Greek National Opera he has staged the operas The Possessed by Charis Vrontos, Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice as well as Carmen and Falstaff.
