NIKOS S. PETROPOULOS

Born in Athens, he studied scenic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy, as well as architecture. He completed his doctoral thesis on Russian baroque, applied in scenography and architecture. He has collaborated with the National Theatre of Greece, the National Theatre of Northern Greece as well as with private theatre companies for more than 150 productions. He also designed sets for television series. In 1985 he turned to opera, designing sets and costumes for productions in Greece and internationally. With the Greek National Opera he has worked in numerous successful productions such as Tosca, Orfeo ed Euridice, Lucia di Lammermoor, Les Pêcheurs de perles, Carmen, La traviata, Nabucco, Madama Butterfly, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, etc. He has been commissioned a study for an opera house by the Friends of Music Society, Athens. He was a consultant to Decathlon Company regarding the renovation of the National Theatre of Greece, TOMI for the renovation of the Piraeus Municipal Theatre and Beijing Aquatics Centre International Competition for issues concerning aesthetic intervention (2008 Olympic Games). Ηe received the Grand Prize of the Union of Greek Critics for Drama and Music (2009).
