Vangelis Karipis

Βorn in Athens in 1971. He studied Byzantine music and music theory at the Hellenic Conservatory, graduating in 1992. Simultaneously, he developed an interest in percussion, initially teaching himself before taking lessons with renowned teachers such as Trichy Sankaran, Joe Santos, Jamey Haddad and Arto Tunçboyaciyan. He has collaborated with numerous Greek composers and singers, including Dionysis Savvopoulos, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Nikos Kypourgos, Nikos Xydakis, Orfeas Peridis, Giorgos Andreou, Encardia, Sokratis Malamas, Christos Tsiamoulis, Evanthia Rebutsika, Alkinoos Ioannidis, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Giorgos Dalaras, Domna Samiou and Chronis Aidonidis. He has participated in performances in Greece and abroad. He has been active in the recording industry for the last 18 years, participating in about 400 productions, as well as in recordings for theatre productions. For the past five years, he has been teaching traditional percussion in groups across Greece. For the past two years, he has also been a member of the music kinetics group “Ta paidia krouei”. Since October 2016, he has taught percussion on the postgraduate programme at the Department of Music Studies at the University of Athens.
