Thimios Atzakas

Musician, composer and producer. He studied at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig. Since 2001, he has consistently occupied himself with the oud and the use of various modal musical systems in contemporary music composition, orchestration and narrative, as well as with improvisation. As a soloist or ensemble member, he has performed in Greece and abroad. He has also made audio and video recordings for Greek and foreign radio and television stations (WDR, Deutsche Welle, MDR, Arte, BBC). He has issued four personal records and participated in 18. Since 2010, he has been performing and recording as a permanent member of the early music ensemble Ex Silentio. He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Music Science and Art of the University of Macedonia and a founding member of the international music community Music Village (Agios Lavrentios, Pelion, Greece) as well as of the artistic forum to avgo (Thessaloniki, Greece). He has carried out over 150 symbiotic music workshops, performances and educational programmes. His personal album Udopia (Carpe Diem Records, 2016) was recently primed with the German Record Critics’ Award.
