A Streetcar Named Desire – 21/6, Stavros Niarchos Hall
Future Cargo – 23–28/6, Stavros Niarchos Park
To Have Been So Close So Many Times – 27 & 28/6, Alternative Stage
SNF Nostos 2026, from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), is collaborating once again with the Greek National Opera (GNO) to present three major premieres at multiple venues within the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC)..
SNF Nostos 2026 will take place from 21 to 28 June at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), to celebrate the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s (SNF) 30-year grantmaking journey. The program features discussions, performances, art, music, and numerous other events. In the context of its longstanding relationship with the SNF, the GNO will showcase three major premieres of dance and music theatre performances.
On the 27th and 28th of June, GNO Director Giorgos Koumendakis will present his new piece, To Have Been So Close So Many Times, at the Alternative Stage—a production featuring four poems by Constantine P. Cavafy, three choreographers, nine GNO Ballet dancers, one singer, a sculptural installation, and two instrumental ensembles. Instead of following a linear narrative, this performance invites the audience to take part in an immersive emotional experience, an inward ritual.
On the 21st of June, the GNO Ballet will present the new, captivating dance production A Streetcar Named Desire by Valentina Turcu, based on Tennessee Williams’ emblematic play of the same name, at the Stavros Niarchos Hall. The performance offers a contemporary physical interpretation of the archetypal relationship between Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski, set to music composed by Max Richter, Björk, and Eliza Lumley.
From the 23rd to the 28th of June, Future Cargo by Frauke Requardt and David Rosenberg will make its Athens premiere at Stavros Niarchos Park, featuring dancers from the Greek National Opera Ballet. Future Cargo is an immersive sci-fi dance performance set inside a futuristic 40-foot haulage truck.
The GNO’s participation in the SNF Nostos 2026’s diverse and internationally reaching program reflects its commitment to producing and presenting high-quality artistic works, with an emphasis on contemporary creation, broader outreach, and social impact.
The productions to be presented at SNF Nostos 2026 are made possible by a grant from the SNF to enhance the GNO’s artistic outreach.
Admission to the GNO performances as well as to the rest of the events featured in the SNF Nostos 2026 program (except for the concerts that will take place as part of the collaboration Release Athens x SNF Nostos) will be free to the public. Booking will open on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, at 12.00 EET, via ticketservices.gr.

A Streetcar Named Desire is a new ballet by Valentina Turcu based on Tennessee Williams’ emblematic play of the same name. The production offers a contemporary, profoundly psychological interpretation of one of the 20th century’s most important texts, conveying its dramatic tension through physical expression. Set against the backdrop of a musical composition featuring works by Max Richter, Björk, and Eliza Lumley, and an unadorned yet emotionally charged stage setting, the choreography focuses on the fragile balance among desire, illusion, and memory. At its core stands Blanche DuBois, a traumatized heroine struggling between reality and her inner world, in a performance in which the body serves as a carrier of memory and emotion. A Streetcar Named Desire is a co-production between the Greek National Opera and the Maribor Slovene National Theatre.

Future Cargo is a sci-fi dance performance set inside a futuristic 40-foot haulage truck. Through an imaginative stage mechanism featuring dancers on a moving conveyor belt, and headphones that enhance the audience’s immersive sound experience, this work offers an original, experiential approach to modern dance. Designed exclusively for outdoor venues, Future Cargo expands the boundaries of stage narration and reaches a broad audience, combining artistic innovation with a directly accessible experience. As its creators, Frauke Requardt & David Rosenberg, note: ‘We envisage creating an impossible internal space that defies the preconception of the viewer. We want to invite an audience into a world they never thought possible.’

Modern dance meets music theatre in the new pieces composed by Giorgos Koumendakis, one of the most renowned and versatile Greek composers. Four chamber works, influenced by traditional Greek music, converse with four poems by Constantine P. Cavafy, set in the amanes style and performed onstage by singer Zaharias Karounis. Three choreographers, Patricia Apergi, Ilias Hatzigeorgiou, and Eva Georgitsopoulou, create new choreographies based on a musical idiom rooted in traditional Greek and Byzantine music. The choreographies explore the musical material through diverse aesthetic and movement languages. Each choreography highlights a different aspect of the relationship among the body, rhythm, and collective memory.
Petros Touloudis’ sculptural installation turns the stage into a moving soundscape. He attempts to create a space where tension does not erupt but lingers, as in Cavafy’s poetry. The installation serves as a mechanism that produces and conveys sound, transforming the stage into a field where poetry, music, and the body meet through the material quality of vibration—a space where emotions do not scream but rather echo across time, allowing room for imagination.
The performance features Angelina Tkatcheva on the santoor, the Oros Ensemble, and the Osmosis Saxophone Quartet. John Papatzanis is in charge of percussion coaching and performs a wide range of percussion on stage.
