GREEK NATIONAL OPERA ORCHESTRA PERCUSSION SUBPRINCIPAL AUDITION (PERMANENT)

 

The Greek National Opera Orchestra announces an audition for a Percussion Subprincipal post (4th Category, permanent) on 1st April 2026.

One (1) Percussion Subprincipal position

Date of Audition: From 1st April 2026, 2nd April and 3rd April 2026, (depending on the number of candidates)
Start time: 10:00

Submission of Application:

From 5/2/2026 until 6/3/2026 (time 14:00)

Terms and Conditions of Application

We accept applications from individuals with Greek citizenship or members of the European Union.

Candidates who wish to participate in the competition must submit the following supporting documents:

1. Application: Download the application form here.
2. CV: The CV should depict the artistic and personal abilities and skills of the candidate.
3. Photocopy of ID or Passport.
4. Candidates under the age of 21 who claim the status of a recognized talent (see appl. form    case No.4.), must submit evidence to justify this status. The verification of this will be conducted by the designated Audition Committee

Those wishing to take part in the competition can submit the supporting documents:

B. By Postal mail via registered letter or courier. The post office receipt of the deposit should follow the submission dates of application (closing date: 6/3/2026 at 14:00).

Piano accompaniment is mandatory. The National Opera of Greece doesn’t provide a pianist for accompaniment, but candidates are welcome to contact the Orchestra Office to discuss possible options

Audition Venue:
Rehearsal room of GNO Orchestra on the GNO building, located at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, 5A floor, Andrea Syggrou Ave. 364, Kallithea 17674, Athens, Greece.
The order of the candidates’ appearance will be determined by draw which will take place on Wednesday 1/4/2026 at 9:00 in the rehearsal room of GNO Orchestra (see Audition Venue).
The presence of the candidates at the draw is mandatory.
It is noted that the absence of a candidate from the draw means his/her automatic exclusion from the competition.

 

Repertoire requirements:

1. André Jolivet: Concerto pour percussion et Orchestre (with piano accompaniment) III mov. Rapidement
2. A musical work of candidate’s choice (must be stated in the application form). In case the selected piece requires the use of additional instruments beyond those provided by the orchestra, the candidate is required      to provide them with his own responsibility.
    On the day of the audition, candidates are required to submit to the committee two (2) copies of the musical work of their choice.

Additional clarifications

The orchestra will provide the following instruments for the audition:

  • Snare Drum Pearl Philharmonic 4’’ × 14’’, 6-ply Maple Shell, renaissance skin
  • Pearl high snare drum stand
  • Pearl low snare drum stand
  • Xylophone Adams Alpha F4–C8
  • Glockenspiel Kolberg F2–E5, without pedal (black keys)
  • Glockenspiel Bergerault C5–E8, with pedal
  • Vibraphone Adams Alpha F3–F6
  • Marimba Kolberg Avantgarde, 5 octaves (C–C4)
  • Tambourines: Black Swamp 10’’ German Silver, Chromium-Phosphor 10’’ Bronze
  • Triangles: Kolberg, Black Swamp 4”- 8’’
  • Castanets: Black Swamp OV-CM
  • Cymbals: Zildjian Constantinople MH 20’’, Meinl Symphonic Medium 18’’
  • Bass Drum: Adams 36’’, fiber skin
  • 3 cowbells
  • Slapstick
  • Ratchet

In addition, the following equipment will be available:

  • High and low chairs
  • Various trap tables
  • Various cymbal stands

Candidates are required to bring their own mallets/sticks for all percussion instruments.
Candidates may use the orchestra’s instruments; however, if they wish, they may choose to use their own cymbals, tambourine, triangle, and castanets, as well as their own bass drum mallets.
For the bass drum, the orchestra will also provide a limited selection of mallets, from which candidates may choose, if they wish so.
Changing the tuning of the orchestra’s snare drum is not permitted.
The Orchestra of the Greek National Opera may provide limited practice time with the orchestra’s percussion instruments for candidates who wish to do so.
