Following a highly successful seven-year journey full of creative encounters and artistic growth, the Greek National Opera Intercultural Orchestra concluded its first cycle with a remarkable concert at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, in collaboration with Jordi Savall and the musical ensemble Hespèrion XXI.

During the current season, the GNO Intercultural Orchestra opens a new cycle, inviting new musicians to join its musical pursuits. The GNO Learning & Participation Department invites both experienced and amateur musicians from diverse nationalities and musical genres to audition for the new musical ensemble being formed. Expressions of interest must be submitted exclusively via the form available here by 30 November 2025.

The Intercultural Orchestra was founded in 2018 by musicians from diverse origins, musical backgrounds, and experiences. Its core concept is that music can serve as a common ground for equal encounter and interaction. The goal of this venture is to help both participants and audiences explore musical genres from different countries and eras experience free improvisation, and engage in musical co-creation through educational methods of exchange and involvement. Its repertoire remains open, extending from traditional music from its members’ home countries to modern music and free improvisation.

From 2018 to this date, the Intercultural Orchestra has carved out a unique path, emphasizing the power of music to bring together diverse cultures. Among its highlights are:

  • the collaboration with Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus
  • the collaboration with Ross Daly and Haig Yazdjian at the GNO Alternative Stage
  • its participation in the contemporary opera Inner Land, a GNO production with a score by Angelos Triantafyllou
  • the collaboration with the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée quintet at the Aix-en-Provence Festival
  • its performances at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, the Acropolis Museum, and the Byzantine & Christian Museum

Harris Lambrakis has been the conductor of the Intercultural Orchestra since its formation.

The audition will take place on 8 & 9 December 2025, from 16.00 to 21.00, at the GNO premises in the SNFCC, 364 Syngrou Avenue, 176 74 Kallithea.

About the process

— The audition repertoire is free (candidates may choose pieces from various musical traditions and styles, improvisation, etc.). Candidates will be requested to perform an excerpt or a complete musical piece for a solo instrument (without accompaniment), lasting no longer than 3 minutes.

— For the audition, candidates are asked to bring their musical instruments. If this is not possible, they are requested to inform the GNO Learning & Participation Department in time so that a solution can be arranged.

— To ensure the orchestra’s intercultural character, in addition to the candidates’ musical skills,  their musical genre specialization, the instrument they play, and their nationality will all be taken into consideration.

Terms and Conditions

— Participation in the Intercultural Orchestra is free of charge.

— To take part in the workshop, participants are required to attend it for its entire duration. 

— All applicants will be notified whether their application has been accepted or rejected exclusively via email.
