The Greek National Opera Ballet is to present The Nutcracker, choreographed by Konstantinos Rigos, in Cyprus

The Greek National Opera Ballet is to present Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, in an impressive new choreography by GNO Ballet Director Konstantinos Rigos, on 20 and 21 October 2023 at the Pattihio Municipal Theatre Limassol as part of the Grand Ballets event organised by the Limassol Municipality (Cyprus). Lead Donor of the GNO is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

In this Nutcracker –a production first presented to great success inside the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the GNO at the SNFCC back in December 2021– GNO Ballet Director Konstantinos Rigos reinterprets the story as a curious fairy tale to be experienced differently by all, depending on their own personal dreams and repressed desires.

The stage set for this production is a glass room –a kind of display case– inside which Marie-Clara dreams away, going on a journey through the imagination. The production’s Christmas tree is a plastic miniature set inside this glass case of a room – Marie-Clara sees the real tree only on a screen. This GNO Ballet Nutcracker walks the line between contemporary visuals and classical dance traditions. The costumes by Deux Hommes are a colourful and impressive mix of pop and glam haute couture pieces, national costumes, and fabrics inspired by past GNO productions.

Following these two performances in Cyprus, this GNO Ballet GNO Ballet Nutcracker will return to the Stavros Niarchos Hall will return to the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the Greek National Opera at the SNFCC on 23, 24, 28, 30 December 2023 and 3, 4, 5 January 2024.
