GNO Learning & Participation Department’s educational programme “Sound Art and Deafness: Music as an Embodied Experience” completes its series of workshops with a relaxed performance, a fully accessible performance of structured improvisation, on Saturday 29 April 2023 at 14.00 at the GNO foyer in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Admission will be free for the public. The event will be accessible to participants through interpretation in Greek Sign Language.

The educational programme is part of the series of events titled “All Τogether at the Οpera”, which is realised with the support of Αlpha Bank.

The workshops “Sound Art and Deafness: Music as an Embodied Experience” (Dana Papachristou, George Samantas) and the GNO Intercultural Orchestra (Harris Lambrakis) will jointly improvise offering a new experience of musical co-creation that is based more on visual stimuli than hearing. With the help of a software created by composer and sound artist Orestis Karamanlis, participants will improvise and compose music as part of a relaxed performance – a practice that breaks down the conventions of the established ways of presenting music, dance, and theatre performances, as a relaxed performance can be attended by persons with visible or invisible disabilities of all ages. During the performance audience members are allowed to freely move around the space, remain there for as long as they wish, take part in the show, talk, or produce sounds. All of us together will have the chance to experientially follow the process of creating a music work and familiarise ourselves with the relaxed performance condition – a performing arts trend that has been gradually spreading over a multitude of music and theatre scenes abroad aiming at full accessibility.

The relaxed performance was designed by the Akoo-o group of artists and the Twixtlab company in collaboration with the GNO Intercultural Orchestra.
