How has music composition changed in the age of Artificial Intelligence? What does it mean to be a composer or performer today? And how can technology serve as a powerful tool for creation, without reproducing stereotypes or limiting imagination?
Starting with these questions, and based on a collaboration between the Greek National Opera and the Music Studies Department of the University of Ioannina, pianist, musicologist, and creative technologist Pavlos Antoniadis, together with director Themelis Glynatsis, opens a dynamic dialogue around contemporary musical creation. They invite composers and performers to explore, through a series of weekly workshops, the intermediate space between composition, performance, and improvisation – as well as the “latent space” revealed through artificial intelligence models.
Through the combination of traditional means – such as scores and designs – and digital tools, the Latent Space team will rediscover the meanings of concepts such as performance, authenticity, artificiality, and personal mark, in a time when Generative AI is transforming the boundaries of artistic creativity. More specifically, participants will have the chance to explore and discuss the transformation and translation of narrative, historical, aesthetic, or ideological material into music theatre dramaturgy. At the same time, they will investigate how an artistic organization’s choices can shape its repertoire, what “good taste” means, and how the dominant perception of performance and authenticity can be challenged.
To participate in these workshops, no previous technological experience is required. With the help of cutting-edge technologies, participants will navigate diverse musical and textual materials, collecting and transforming data on movement, sound, image, and touch. They will be introduced to specialized software, experiment with sensors and movement analysis technologies, and get acquainted with the specially designed setup. Moreover, thanks to the GNO’s collaboration with the Department of Music Studies of the University of Ioannina, participants will have access to advanced technological equipment, while during the workshops, a visit to the Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality Center on the University of Arta Campus will be held.
The entire process will lay the creative foundation for the creation of eight original pieces, in which artistic research will blend with experimentation and new technologies. In addition to experimenting with music and sound and engaging with technology, these meetings will give participants the chance to process their pieces theoretically, explore sound dramaturgy, and find ways to transcribe original material into sound and/or music.
The programme will conclude with the presentation of the pieces created during the workshops. These new pieces will be performed by Pavlos Antoniadis, Associate Professor of Music Communication and Technology at the Department of Music Studies of the University of Ioannina, and other artists, at the GNO Alternative Stage on 6 and 7 May 2026.
