The well-known fairy tale by Charles Perrault, with a slight twist, will be presented for the first time by the GNO in the form of a children’s opera. It is not the wolf that frightens Little Red Riding Hood but the girl who manages to neutralize the wolf by speaking to him about sweets and pastries which make him completely lose his appetite. The music is composed by the American Seymour Barab.

Following last year's great success of Puss in Boots under the direction of Thomas Moschopoulos, the GNO’s children’s production this year is being undertaken by a young director, Dimitris Karantzas, who has already demonstrated exceptional talent in the theater. Last season he directed Xenia Kalogeropoulou’s now classic play Ulyssindbad at the Mikri Porta (Little Door Company), while in the summer he received glowing reviews for Ibsen’s Little Eyolf, which was presented in the framework of the Athens Festival.

The director comments: “Little Red Riding Hood’s home. The forest. Her grandmother’s house. The clearing with the strawberries. The wolf. The place where the singers prepare. The place where the orchestra prepares. Places and attributes become mixed up in an indissoluble and single whole with successive actions and alternation of roles, so that we can once again become familiar with the story of Little Red Riding Hood, a story of departure from home and all the dangers this entails in a gentle yet at the same time dark way and with all participants – singers, musicians, supers – contributing to the narration of the fairy tale”.
