Manon Lescaut

Giacomo Puccini

A passion-filled story of love, the first opera to clearly reveal Puccini’s remarkable musical language. Based on the once highly popular moralizing novel by the Abbé Prévost, the story of the Chevalier Des Grieux and Manon Lescaut has been set to music by many composers. Puccini’s opera stands out for the intensity with which it expresses emotions and the orchestral richness of the music.

The stage direction has been undertaken by one of the world’s most sought-after opera directors, Giancarlo del Monaco, son of famous Italian tenor Mario del Monaco who starred alongside Maria Callas in historic productions at La Scala, Milan in the 1950s. Giancarlo del Monaco has worked as assistant to Wieland Wagner, grandson of the renowned German composer, as well as to the equally famous German director Walter Felsenstein, while he has also directed celebrated festivals and leading opera houses in Germany and France.

The sets for this major production have been undertaken by eminent Greek set designer Nikos Petropoulos, who places the action of the opera in a 1960s film studio, where a movie is being made about Manon Lescaut.

Manon Lescaut was last presented by the Greek National Opera in 1986, that is, 26 years ago.
