In 2005, the instrumental ensemble àktapha presented its first attempt at music theater, centered on Euripides’ Iphigenia. In that performance, storytelling balanced sound, movement, and speech, with speech serving not only to convey meaning but also to explore the expressive power of the human voice. A year later, in collaboration with director Themelis Glynatsis, the ensemble revisits its work, taking it beyond the boundaries of the myth of Iphigenia.

In its new version, the work examines the construct of faith, the traumatic experience of sacrifice, and the believer’s loneliness, extending from a vague prehistoric era to contemporary manifestations of sacrificial service. Set against a unique visual backdrop of destruction and regeneration, the àktapha ensemble, acting as both musicians and theatre performers, builds parallel sound, verbal, and movement biographies of the victim, the believer, and the absent divine element to talk about sacrifice as a ritual, an artistic process, an ontological extreme, and a form of political disillusionment.
