The GNO Alternative Stage introduces the Music Theatre Workshop Cycle – a new annual series of workshops dedicated to supporting emerging artistic creation and to shaping the next generation of music theatre creators. Committed to its role as a hub for new artistic forces, the Greek National Opera provides a framework for research, experimentation, and artistic development, with the aim of producing original stage works.

Selected to participate in the first cycle are six composers, six directors, six set and costume designers, and four lighting designers. The participants will form creative groups that will work together to develop and produce six new music theatre performances to be presented at the GNO Alternative Stage in July 2027.

From September 2026 to June 2027, one weekend each month will be dedicated to workshops, lectures, presentations, masterclasses on musical instruments and operatic voices, as well as readings of works and rehearsals. All events will be open and free to the public, offering the opportunity to attend the creative process and the gradual development of the works.

The programme’s key artistic goal is to cultivate new collaborative practices across diverse artistic disciplines,  explore contemporary and hybrid forms of music theatre, and create new Greek repertoire through processes of collective research, artistic experimentation, and creative risk-taking.
