The workshop Connecting body focuses on the development process of kinesthetics and music perception, as participants learn to harmoniously share space and time. A basic instrument for attaining this result is body music, which proposes an experiential way of co-existing and communicating based exclusively on the use of the body for producing music. The workshop is targeted at people of all ages and it can simultaneously include persons with or without sensory disabilities. The result is every time unique and it depends on the group’s special character.

In October 2018 another music journey without boundaries begins! The Alternative Stage in cooperation with the GNO Educational and Social Activities create a new Intercultural Orchestra. Permanent or temporary residents of Athens, professional and amateur musicians from all the communities of the city are called upon to participate, live a unique experience and create a multi-ethnic repertory from the musical traditions of their countries of origin.
The Intercultural Orchestra aspires to bring the universal language of music closer to us and serves as a focal point for getting together and co-existing, fostering mutual understanding and accepting diversity.
“The point of reference of this ensemble will be music, which – as a universal practise that unites and does not separate, engages in a dialogue and does not force itself – will attempt to open up perspectives, give hope, and mainly, bring forth, incorporate and accept diversity”, notes Harris Lambrakis, the choir manager.
From Athens to Papua New Guinea, from Kenya to Ukraine and from Slovakia to Tanzania, people from all four corners of the earth unite their voices, become one and interpret songs speaking straight to the heart. This is the power of the GNO Alternative Stage’s Intercultural Choir which continues its multicultural journey through the world’s neighbourhoods. In the third year since its creation, the Intercultural Choir continues to offer unique moments and intense feelings to the audiences, and at the same time a unique experience to its members.
Songs of unpaired melodic richness from the traditional music of the countries of origin of its members constitute the Intercultural Choir’s repertory, which continues to be enriched with new material. Already, the Choir has over 25 members, while the last two years it has conducted workshops in refugee and immigrant accommodation sites as well as in open concerts at Kypseli and Omonia squares, at the Athens Airport and the Summer Nostos Festival of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

A theatre and music workshop in collaboration with the street magazine “Schedia”, the Reception and Solidarity Centre of the Municipality of Athens and the Athens 2018 Global Book Capital project. With the support of the Athens Municipality Cultural Network. Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities offered the inspiration for the creation of a meeting point in the form of a workshop, titled Here, where people can meet and communicate through speech and sound. People who see the city through the eyes none of us has. Sounds produced in their primal form, creating an urban timbre that none of us has heard. Stories telling a personal trajectory in a city with many faces that none of us has noticed. Calvino’s approach of fantastic cities, in relation to the participants-experienced but invisible to the rest of us city of Athens, is the baseline for a fruitful interaction of speech and sound, stories and songs, theatre and music.
A heavy set, impressive costumes and red velvet don’t always make for a successful opera. In some cases the only thing needed as a set is a few singers, a pianist and a closet. As simple as that. In this pocket opera, this tiny opera production, precedence is given to music and interpretation. Taking into consideration all of the above, GNO’s Educational and Social Activities shrink Mozart’s comic opera Le Nozze di Figaro into two parallel workshops to create its pocket version with all of you as protagonists! The participants of these two interconnected workshops (music and visual arts/scenography) will morph into composers, musicians, singers and set designers of their very own opera and will become a large company. In this wildly fun pocket opera there’s room for everybody!
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 40 participants (visual group for children aged 8-12, music group for teenagers aged 13-18)
PARTICIPATION IS FREE ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS
