The Greek National Opera’s successful production of La forza del destino by Giuseppe Verdi will be available on GNO TV from the 1st of November 2025 to the 1st of July 2026. Following its nomination for the Best New Production Award at the 2025 International Opera Awards, which will be hosted by the GNO for the first time on 13 November, the production will be accessible for free from the 1st to the 30th of November 2025 at nationalopera.gr/GNOTV. GNO TV was established and operates thanks to a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) [www.SNF.org] to enhance the Greek National Opera’s artistic outreach.

La forza del destino was staged at the Greek National Opera at the beginning of 2025, in a highly ambitious production led by a world-class creative team. It was directed by internationally acclaimed Greek opera director from the younger generation Rodula Gaitanou, with sets and costumes designed by George Souglides. Dimitra Kastellou was responsible for the movement, Giuseppe di Iorio designed the lighting, and Dick Straker was in charge of the videos.

The GNO Orchestra was led by the renowned Italian conductor Paolo Carignani.

In the leading trio of vocally and interpretatively demanding roles, the audience packed into the Stavros Niarchos Hall had the opportunity to enjoy prominent soloists of international acclaim. Leonora was performed by Cellia Costea, the celebrated soprano from the GNO with an international career; Don Carlo was portrayed by the renowned Greek baritone Dimitri Platanias, who has also received international praise; and the role of Don Alvaro was sung by the distinguished Argentinian tenor Marcelo Puente.

The GNO bass Petros Magoulas took on the roles of the Marquis of Calatrava and Padre Guardiano. The Belarusian mezzo-soprano Oksana Volkova portrayed Preziosilla, and the GNO bass Yanni Yannissis sang Fra Melitone. Alongside them performing were also Ioanna-Vasiliki Koraki, Georgios Papadimitriou, Yannis Kalyvas, and Maxim Klonovskiy.

The GNO Chorus was conducted by Agathangelos Georgakatos.

This production was filmed in the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the Greek National Opera on 6 and 9 February 2025.
