All Together At The Opera

A series of actions for universal and equal access to the opera

GNO Learning & Participation Department

The Greek National Opera, striving for universal and equal access to its performances, launches “All Together At The Opera”, a new series of accessibility actions. The first fully accessible performances of the Greek National Opera were given in the Stavros Niarchos Hall last December, as part of the production of the opera for the whole family The Magic Pillows. For the year 2022, the cycle “All Together At The Opera” includes fully accessible performances of Gounod’s Faust in the Stavros Niarchos Hall, as well as experiential art workshops for persons with or without disabilities and educational seminars on inclusion methods and practices for professionals. The series of actions “All Together At The Opera” is made possible thanks to the support of Alpha Bank. The Lead Donor of the GNO Learning and Participation Department is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

In collaboration with the cultural organisation liminal, the Greek National Opera ensures the conditions for the unhindered audiovisual experience of the performances of Charles Gounod’s Faust on 10 and 17 April 2022 in the Stavros Niarchos Hall at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Provisions have been made so that for these two selected performances there will be seats for deaf/hard of hearing users of the Greek Sign Language, seats for deaf/hard of hearing persons who will be able to use SDH surtitles, as well as seats for visually impaired persons, who will be able to use the Audio Description Service (with or without a guide dog).

Meanwhile, the GNO Learning & Participation Department, in collaboration with SMouTH (Synergy of Music Theatre: Costas Lamproulis, Despoina Bounitsi, Filippos Zoukas and specialised partners), which has numerous projects and synergies with leading organisations and artists in the field of accessibility and inclusion to its credit, launch the following educational workshops with the goal of enhancing the active participation and integration of persons with motor and sensory disabilities into the world of music theatre and dance:

Composition and Inclusion

Experiential art workshops

These experiential art workshops, based on the principles of inclusion and accessibility, are targeted at adults with or without disabilities, who love performance arts and seek chances for artistic creation. Participants are called upon to make use of their personal and spontaneous expression, as well as their personal experiences, and to combine, through a collective process, the arts of theatre, music, and dance so as to create their own original music theatre performance. Based upon structured improvisation, inspiration from a plethora of specialised exercises and games, and using movement, rhythm, music and speech or even nods as raw material, the members of the group will express themselves, share, feel and be taught through equitable participation in the creative process.

Part of the experiential workshops, as well as the entire original music theatre performance that will result from the workshops will be filmed, so as to capture and bring out the importance of inclusive practices in the development of artistic skills and the encouragement of artistic creation.

Start of workshops: Saturday 19 February 2022

Workshops’ schedule: Saturday and Sunday 12.00 – 14.00

Duration of the programme: Saturday 19 February 2022 – Sunday 17 April 2022

The experiential art workshops will be held in sessions of 20 participants at the GNO facilities in the SNFCC.

Start of seminars: Saturday 19 February 2022

Seminars’ schedule: Saturday and Sunday 17.00 – 20.00

Duration of the programme: Saturday 19 February 2022 – Sunday 27 February 2022

The educational seminars will be held in sessions of 20 participants at the GNO facilities in the SNFCC.
