For four months, the rehearsals building of the Greek National Opera in Kallithea will be transformed into a sound and image factory. With the participation of 18 artists coming from the fields of music, sound and visual arts, selected via an open call, the new workshop, Transmedia Labworks, will focus on the relationship between opera and digital arts, interactive media and programming. Starting with Richard Strauss’s Elektra, the participants are called upon to experiment in order to redefine the concept of performative act in opera. The on-stage action will not be seen as a reproduction of narrative successions, received by the audience as an external observer, but as a spatial interactive experience, co-formed by the audience’s active participation. The aim of the Transmedia Labworks workshop is to create a series of experimental, cross-media and interactive audiovisual projections and interpretations of selected scenes from the foresaid opera. Transmedia Labworks will be completed by opening its doors to the public and by giving them the unique chance to become part of an exciting audiovisual experience. Exactly at the point where opera meets with digital cross-mediacy and computer interpretation.
The GNO Alternative Stage goes to Larissa for the annual Regional Troupes Meeting which brings creative groups operating in the field of musical theatre into direct contact with each other. For four whole days, at various venues in the city, four groups from Thessaloniki, Rethymno, Amfissa and Larissa will participate in experiential workshops, share experiences, experiment and develop their skills. The meeting will be completed with the presentation of a short play by each group. The introductory workshop titled “Directing music” will be led by GNO Alternative Stage’s artistic director, Alexandros Eflkidis.
A new choir is born for women and men over 65 years of age. The members of the Choir should be passionate about music and singing, without necessarily having some kind of expertise in it. Based on singing and select cross-sectoral approaches combining music act with speech, the Choir aims at contributing to the development of emotional bonds and increased socialization among its members. At the same time, in the Choir’s creative context, learning is turned into a creative experience which will offer joy and improve people’s quality of life.
PARTICIPATION WILL BE FREE ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS

It is never too late to learn how to play the guitar. The successful programme Guitar express continues through a new cycle of workshops for people over 65 years of age who have never hidden their adoration for Jimmy Hendrix or Paco de Lucia. In this programme, guitar becomes the vehicle for beginners’ fast and easy access to music and the process of learning a musical instrument. Singing also plays an important part in the programme, as all participants will have the unique chance to also practise their voice. A joyous, cheerful company is waiting for you at the GNO. Guitar express, company express.

A theatre and music workshop in collaboration with the street magazine “Schedia”, the Reception and Solidarity Centre of the Municipality of Athens and the Athens 2018 Global Book Capital project. With the support of the Athens Municipality Cultural Network. Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities offered the inspiration for the creation of a meeting point in the form of a workshop, titled Here, where people can meet and communicate through speech and sound. People who see the city through the eyes none of us has. Sounds produced in their primal form, creating an urban timbre that none of us has heard. Stories telling a personal trajectory in a city with many faces that none of us has noticed. Calvino’s approach of fantastic cities, in relation to the participants-experienced but invisible to the rest of us city of Athens, is the baseline for a fruitful interaction of speech and sound, stories and songs, theatre and music.
From Athens to Papua New Guinea, from Kenya to Ukraine and from Slovakia to Tanzania, people from all four corners of the earth unite their voices, become one and interpret songs speaking straight to the heart. This is the power of the GNO Alternative Stage’s Intercultural Choir which continues its multicultural journey through the world’s neighbourhoods. In the third year since its creation, the Intercultural Choir continues to offer unique moments and intense feelings to the audiences, and at the same time a unique experience to its members.
Songs of unpaired melodic richness from the traditional music of the countries of origin of its members constitute the Intercultural Choir’s repertory, which continues to be enriched with new material. Already, the Choir has over 25 members, while the last two years it has conducted workshops in refugee and immigrant accommodation sites as well as in open concerts at Kypseli and Omonia squares, at the Athens Airport and the Summer Nostos Festival of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

In October 2018 another music journey without boundaries begins! The Alternative Stage in cooperation with the GNO Educational and Social Activities create a new Intercultural Orchestra. Permanent or temporary residents of Athens, professional and amateur musicians from all the communities of the city are called upon to participate, live a unique experience and create a multi-ethnic repertory from the musical traditions of their countries of origin.
The Intercultural Orchestra aspires to bring the universal language of music closer to us and serves as a focal point for getting together and co-existing, fostering mutual understanding and accepting diversity.
“The point of reference of this ensemble will be music, which – as a universal practise that unites and does not separate, engages in a dialogue and does not force itself – will attempt to open up perspectives, give hope, and mainly, bring forth, incorporate and accept diversity”, notes Harris Lambrakis, the choir manager.
The Music Workshop at the male wing of the Korydallos Penitentiary continues with a fourth cycle of meetings. Through weekly meetings, which will begin in January 2019, participants from all wings of the Penitentiary will experiment with sound and music. Through experimentation and guidance by experienced musicians, the participants will acquire basic music and performing skills.
The workshop will be completed with a concert, in which prisoners themselves will perform the compositions. The main aim of this workshop is to cultivate participants’ creativity, team spirit and freedom of expression.
The Dance Workshop at the Eleonas Penitentiary in Thebes continues with a new cycle of meetings from January to June 2019. Through guided exercises, female prisoners of all ages create their own original choreographies, which will be presented at the end of the workshop as a dance-theatre performance. The workshop aims to foster the free expression stemming from the group dance process as well as substantial communication between the prisoners.
GNO’s Educational and Social Activities introduce a music workshop at the General Penitentiary of Thessaloniki (Diavata Prison) from January to June 2019. Participants will be acquainted with the sound of different musical instruments and rhythm as creative tools of expression, while through a guided group process they will compose and perform their own original pieces.
A heavy set, impressive costumes and red velvet don’t always make for a successful opera. In some cases the only thing needed as a set is a few singers, a pianist and a closet. As simple as that. In this pocket opera, this tiny opera production, precedence is given to music and interpretation. Taking into consideration all of the above, GNO’s Educational and Social Activities shrink Mozart’s comic opera Le Nozze di Figaro into two parallel workshops to create its pocket version with all of you as protagonists! The participants of these two interconnected workshops (music and visual arts/scenography) will morph into composers, musicians, singers and set designers of their very own opera and will become a large company. In this wildly fun pocket opera there’s room for everybody!
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 40 participants (visual group for children aged 8-12, music group for teenagers aged 13-18)

While children and adults will be getting enthralled by the great Lena Platonos’s musical fairy tale The emperor’s nightingale at the GNO Alternative Stage, something equally magical will be happening at the GNO’s Studio B on the 5th floor. There, little children participating in the exciting animation workshop The nightingale whispered to me will create their own original performance, in which the set will not consist of ordinary objects but unique motion pictures! After having been taught the basic principles of animation, they will then write the script, experiment with motion pictures, direct and star in their very own animated performance! So, there, at Studio B, a colourful animated world will be brought to life and the nightingale’s whisper will become a song by “tomorrow’s” script writers, directors and protagonists.
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 15 participants aged 9-12
Participation is free on a first come first served basis
