I. Position
The Greek National Opera (GNO) announces an audition to fill one (1) position for a Cello player to meet the staffing requirements of its artistic productions from November 2026. The successful candidate will be employed by the Greek National Opera under a fixed-term employment contract of nine (9) months, with the possibility of of renewal at the discretion of the Greek National Opera.
II. Application Procedure
Applicants wishing to participate in the audition must complete the relevant Application Form (see here) and attach it to their application email, together with:
• copies of their academic qualifications
• a curriculum vitae
Applicants who are currently employed by another orchestra within the wider Greek public sector (e.g. ERT, the Municipality of Athens, etc.), whether under a fixed-term or permanent contract, must also attach an official certificate from their employer stating their total monthly remuneration.

III. Audition Repertoire
Candidates are required to prepare and perform:
1. Compulsory Concerto
Joseph Haydn, Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major, Hob. VIIb:2, Op. 101 – First Movement
AND
Antonín Dvořák, Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104 – First Movement
OR
Robert Schumann, Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129 – First Movement
2. Orchestral Excerpts, available on the webpage https://www.nationalopera.gr/akroaseis from 25 September 2026 onwards.
Please note that all candidates must perform the concerto repertoire with a pianist of their own choosing, except applicants residing abroad, for whom the Greek National Opera will provide an accompanist.
IV. Audition Procedure
The audition will be conducted before a Selection Committee in two rounds, as follows:
The first round will take place on Thursday, 29 October 2026, at 10:00, in the orchestra rehearsal room on the fifth floor of the Greek National Opera building at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (364 Syngrou Avenue, Kallithea, Athens). The first round will be conducted behind a screen.
Following the first round, a shortlist of candidates will be invited to participate in the second round, which will take place on Saturday, 31 October 2026. Should the number of applicants be limited, the Greek National Opera reserves the right to hold both rounds on Thursday, 29 October 2026.
Candidates will be informed by email of the exact date and time of their audition no later than Thursday, 22 October 2026. Following the completion of the public audition, in addition to the successful candidate, a reserve list of suitable candidates will be announced.
V. Outcome
The decision regarding the successful candidate will be published on the official GNO website by Tuesday, 3 November 2026.
Please note that participation in the audition does not automatically imply employment. The Greek National Opera reserves the right not to appoint any candidate if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, none of the applicants meets the artistic standards required. In such a case, the Greek National Opera reserves the right to announce a new audition at a later date.
