The modern opera The Dead Man and the Resurrection, based on a novel of the same title by Nikos Gavriil Pentzikis and commissioned by the GNO Alternative Stage from the distinguished composer Nicolas Tzortzis, is making its debut in experienced director Anastasia Koumidou’s staging.

A milestone-piece for Greek literature, Nikos Gavriil Pentzikis’ novel The Dead Man and the Resurrection, is adapted into an opera in the style of an inner monologue that serves as a journey with no clear starting point or destination. A wandering through a labyrinth of association of ideas, in which every audience member is invited to carve out their own path and draw their own conclusions.

Nikos Gavriil Pentzikis’ text delves into the themes of love, disillusionment, religiousness, the quest for one’s self, and the journey towards artistic creativity, by focusing on the relationship between the old and the new.

Nicolas Tzortzis’ music, in a permanently fluid state, is transformed, through an exploration of timbres and the possibilities of available sound sources, while accompanying the work’s characters to their life, death, and resurrection. Multiple musical writings intertwine, giving rise to situations that are at times hybrid or a fusion of two different elements or styles, occasionally lacking clarity or being ambiguous, and other times subtly clear.
