Though the title song remains very popular to this day, the operetta based on the farce by Maurice Hennequin, set to music by Theofrastos Sakellaridis (1882-1950), who also wrote the libretto, has not been staged for decades. This is a highly amusing piece that best encapsulates the composer’s amazing talent for musical theatre, which was such a sensation when it was first staged that it even led to a murder.
